Dancing with the oldies...
I have had a real desire lately to read the biographies and autobiographies of men and women of God, and I am currently reading Shadow of the Almighty: The Life and Testament of Jim Elliot...
As I read, I am moved by the passion and desire of men and women (of old?) who laid it all down for the Lord, and who were greatly effective in His service. There are several reasons I love "dancing with these oldies:"
1) Reading about their lives reminds me that I have not in any way reached a spiritual pinnacle. This is so healthy because I can look at my life and say, "Wow! I've never been closer to God!"...and forget that means as much as if I drove 50 miles west (Manchester, NH) and said, "I've never been closer to Hong Kong!" These men and women remind me that I have so much further to go, and help me guard against complacency.

2) Reading about their lives also reminds me God can still work through men and women who surrender - all, and simultaneously more. The more I surrender, the more He demonstrates Himself as God both IN my life and THROUGH my life.

3) Reading about their lives also helps me be patient with God's work. I read about the struggles of Dwight L Moody, Oswald Chambers, or Jim Elliot, and I relax a little, not judging myself so harshly when I fail, but letting the Righteous Judge be the only One whose opinion really matters.

4) Reading about their lives reminds me that continually detaching myself from the world and what it has to offer REALLY IS worthwhile and God-honoring. The world continues to try and suck me in - lives of great men and women encourage me to constantly loose the attachments of the world and live as a citizen of heaven in loyalty first and foremost to the King of kings.

Just wanted to share my thoughts - now I have to run and go do class tours at the Rochester Fairgrounds today...
